Demographics

The east side of San Jose is selected because of the historical and socially-relevant roles its residents play in the growth and development of the city. East Side Union High School District is one of California's largest high school districts with an enrollment of over 24,200 students at 16 high schools. The student population is diverse: 42.1% are Hispanic, 28.2% are Asian, 13.6% are White, 9.8% are Filipino, 4.7% are African American, 1.1% is Pacific Islander, and 0.4% is American Indian.

History

East San Jose was also the name of a former city that sat to the east of San Jose, which was annexed by the City of San Jose in 1911. Before World War II, East San Jose was a small section of San Jose located on the east banks of the Guadalupe River and west of today's U.S. Route 101.
